This publication presents monthly information on sales of new motor vehicles in each state/territory in original, seasonally adjusted and trend estimated terms. The original data are sourced from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Sales data are available for passenger vehicles, sports utility vehicles (SUVs), other vehicles and total vehicles at the state/territory and national levels.


JANUARY 2005 KEY POINTS

Trend

The trend estimate for sales of new motor vehicles increased 0.6% to 82,675 in January 2005. When compared with January 2004 (77,862), the trend estimate has shown an increase of 6.2%.

The trend estimate for sales of passenger vehicles and other vehicles each recorded an increase of 0.7% over the last month while sales of sports utility vehicles increased 0.2%.

When compared with January 2004, the trend estimate of passenger vehicle sales increased 4.0%, sports utility vehicles increased 13.7%, and other vehicles increased 6.5%.

The majority of states and territories recorded increases in trend estimates for sales of new motor vehicles in January 2005 compared to December 2004. South Australia (-0.2%), Western Australia (-0.2%) and Northern Territory (-1.5%) were the only states or territories to record decreases.


Seasonally adjusted

The seasonally adjusted estimate for sales of new motor vehicles increased 8.9% to 85,486 in January 2005. Passenger vehicle sales increased 10.1%, sales of sports utility vehicles increased 8.4%, while sales of other new vehicles increased 6.0% in January 2005 compared to December 2004.

All states and territories recorded increases in the seasonally adjusted estimate for the sales of new motor vehicles, with South Australia recording the largest increase (17.2%).
